Conference ExperiencesComments from conference attendees"Over the last four years, the CME conferences have had a tremendous impact on my knowledge as a doctor in training to become a physician." "The workshops were practical, down-to-earth, and hands-on. Excellent!" "This is my first time attending this type of conference. I wish many colleagues will be invited next time." Comments from conference speakersThe trip to Ghana was a transformative experience. I learned much about rich history and culture of Ghana from the center of the Asante kingdom near Kumasi to the slave castle at El Mina . Another dimension was understanding the powerful influence of West African culture and music on the culture and faith expressions of African Americans. Everywhere are the signs of faith. We’ve shared with many the extent to which the expressions of faith of Ghanaian Christians are ubiquitous , including the naming of their businesses, from the “Jesus Saves” taxi to the “Christ the King” hair salon. A highlight of the trip was the opportunity to meet a number of Ghanaian and West African physicians who have dedicated themselves to live out their Christian calling to serve others. Deeply affecting was the warmth and hospitality of the Ghanaian people. I formed some friendships in that short time and have continued the conversation via the internet. The experience was an inspiration that renewed my sense of medicine as a vocation deeply rooted in my own Christian faith. I was born and raised in Africa and graduated from medical school in Europe. Currently, I practice and teach medicine in the USA. When I was growing up, I dreamt of being a medical doctor practicing and teaching in Africa. Since that dream has not been realized, I have always felt the existence of a huge gap in my life. Thanks to Africa Partners Medical, my experience in Ghana has partly filled this gap. There were numerous opportunities to teach and train others as well as to have short and long term impact both on the healthcare providers and receivers. Most important to me, my participation in Ghana has given me the self satisfaction I have never had in my life. Such experiences usually do not happen more than once in a lifetime. In my case, I plan to repeat it annually. |
