Preparing for a lifetime of compassionate and quality care
Conference for Physicians and Nurses early in their career
After two long years of virtual interaction with our doctors and nurses due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, Africa Partners Medical held the 5th in-person conference for Physicians and Nurses early in their career. The conference title is Partnering for Life: Preparing for a lifetime of compassionate and quality care.
We had a wonderful new venue this year moving from Aburi to the Coconut Grove Resort in Elmina, Ghana and the conference was held March 21-23, 2022. This new location was more centrally located and served as a much needed retreat on the ocean for these young dedicated professionals who work very long hours. We celebrate that this was our largest turnout ever, with nearly 100 doctors and nurses including alumni and new participants. We hope to see continued growth in our reach and thank our generous supporters for making this possible. In addition to our usual focus on the core themes of providing humanistic care, effective communication, teamwork, partnering with patients, and wellness/wellbeing the medical theme of the 2022 conference was focused on the use of accessible forms of medical imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. We were able to include a hands-on ultrasound training workshop that was very well received. All attendees also received either initial training or updates for Basic Life Support and Newborn Resuscitation (see descriptions below). Some also received training on dealing with obstetrical emergencies and most participated in communications skills interactions/roll play scenarios.
• Basic Life Support – The topics covered include BLS/CPR for Adults (assessment, chest compressions, airway and breathing using a bag-valve-mask, two rescuer BLS/CPR, Automated External Defibrillator training), Child and Infant BLS/CPR (chest compressions for child, chest compressions for infant, airway and breathing with BVM, two rescuer infant/child BLS/CPR, and AED training for children), adult/child/infant choking, and skills testing.
• Helping Babies Breathe (Newborn Resuscitation) – This workshop focused on the critical first minute of a baby’s life, the “golden minute” in a resource-limited setting. Participants in this workshop were trained in important aspects of early newborn management, including temperature support, breathing stimulation and assisted ventilation.
• Physician-Patient & Physician Other Healthcare Professional Interactions – This workshop focused on the key aspects of professional and collaborative interactions between physician, patients, and other members of the medical care team. The session was led by physicians, nurses and lay individuals. Role play scenarios helped solidify skills.
• Obstetrical Emergencies – The topics such as antepartum and postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, and management of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia were highlighted in this workshop session.
A special thank you to the Coconut Grove Resort, our 2022 Faculty (from the United States and Ghana), 2022 participants (alumni and first time attendees) and all of our generous supporters for making the 2022 conference a reality. The attendees expressed their sincere gratitude in the investment made in all of them as they are launching into careers of meaningful service. Over the next 18 months our goal is to engage and continue virtual trainings until we are able to meet again at the next conference which is planned for October 2023.
